Excellent at fifty options. Poor at the right one.

AI will produce fifty variations in the time a designer produces two. Choosing which of them is right, and whether any of them is, is a different skill entirely — and it has not been automated.

Short answer

AI graphic design uses generative tools within the design process: exploring directions, producing variations, removing backgrounds, extending images and generating supporting visuals. It is not used for logos or trademarks, because generated marks cannot be reliably protected or cleared against existing ones.

01 The premise

Generation is cheap. Judgement is not.

The genuine shift AI has made in design is the cost of options. Exploring ten visual directions used to be a real investment; now the exploration is nearly free and the expensive part is deciding. That is a useful change, because more exploration generally produces better outcomes — provided somebody competent is choosing.

Where it goes wrong is when generation is mistaken for design. Fifty generated images are fifty guesses at what you asked for, produced by something that does not know your customers, your competitors, or what the piece has to achieve. Selecting well requires knowing all three, and that is the part that has not been automated.

The unglamorous background work is where AI is least controversial and most useful: removing backgrounds, extending an image to a different aspect ratio, cleaning up a photograph, upscaling something supplied too small. Those are tasks with a visible correct answer, which is exactly the condition under which generative tools are reliable.

02 Straight talk

Where I use it, and where I refuse.

The refusals are about protectability and honesty rather than about craft.

Used here

  • Concept exploration. Ten directions quickly, before committing to one. Cheap and genuinely useful.
  • Ad creative variations. Many versions of an approved concept for testing.
  • Background removal and extension. Reliable, fast, and a visible failure mode when it goes wrong.
  • Image cleanup and upscaling. Rescuing a photograph supplied too small or badly lit.
  • Supporting visuals. Textures, patterns and abstract elements where nothing is being claimed.

Refused

  • Logos and trademarks. Generated marks cannot be reliably cleared against existing ones or confidently protected.
  • Images of real people. Generated faces presented as staff, customers or clients.
  • Fake product photography. Showing a product that does not look like yours misrepresents what you sell.
  • Imitating a named artist. Legally contested and ethically poor, whatever a tool permits.
  • Fabricated documents or proof. Certificates, awards, screenshots. Not a grey area.

03 The logo question

Why not logos.

This is the refusal clients question most, so it is worth explaining properly. A logo is not primarily a picture — it is an asset you intend to own exclusively and, frequently, to register as a trademark. That requires being able to demonstrate origination and to establish that it does not conflict with existing marks.

Generated output complicates both. Ownership of AI output varies by tool and jurisdiction and remains unsettled. More practically, a generative model produces output derived from a large body of existing work, which makes similarity to an existing mark a genuine risk rather than a theoretical one — and you would discover it at the worst possible moment, after printing signage and filing an application.

For a logo, the cost difference between generated and drawn is small and the risk difference is not. So logos are drawn, and AI stays out of that particular file.

If it is thirty ad variations or a hundred background removals, AI genuinely helps and I will use it. If it is a logo or anything you need to own outright, it does not — and I will explain why.

04 Human work

What still requires a person.

Where the cost genuinely remains, and where it should.

Human work

  • Knowing what the piece must achieve. A brief is a commercial judgement. Generation without one produces attractive irrelevance.
  • Selecting. Choosing which of fifty is right requires knowing your market. This is the actual skill now.
  • Finishing. Type, spacing, alignment and hierarchy. Generated images are consistently weak at typography.
  • Brand consistency. Matching what already exists so new work does not look like it came from elsewhere.
  • Checking for problems. Similarity to existing marks, unintended content, cultural issues. Somebody has to look.
  • Being accountable. For what goes out under your name. That cannot be delegated to a tool.
