You have five seconds before the skip button.

Everything about YouTube advertising is decided in the first five seconds. Not the targeting, not the budget, not the landing page — whether somebody is still watching when the skip button becomes available.

Short answer

YouTube Ads are video campaigns bought through Google Ads. The dominant factor is the opening five seconds, because that is when viewers can skip. It works best for creating demand in categories where people do not yet search, and for remarketing, rather than for capturing existing intent.

01 The premise

The economics of the skip button.

Skippable in-stream ads have an unusual and rather fair economic structure: in most cases you are not charged unless somebody watches a meaningful portion or interacts. Your ad being skipped costs you nothing but the opportunity. That sounds comfortable and it produces a specific discipline — there is no penalty for being ignored, and enormous reward for being watched.

Which is why the opening matters more than everything else combined. Most business videos open with a logo animation, a slow establishing shot, or a presenter introducing themselves. Every one of those spends the five seconds that decide the outcome on information nobody asked for. The ads that work state the problem, show the thing, or say something surprising, immediately.

The other thing worth being honest about is what YouTube is for. It is a demand creation channel. Nobody on YouTube was looking for you — they were watching something else and you interrupted. That makes it excellent for categories where customers do not know the solution exists, and a poor substitute for Search when they already do.

02 Formats

Which YouTube format for which job.

The format choice constrains what the creative can be, so decide it first.

FormatWhat it is for
Skippable in-streamThe workhorse. Five seconds to earn attention, then as long as you can hold it. Charged on watched or engaged views.
Non-skippable (15s)Guaranteed exposure, guaranteed irritation. Occasionally right for brand messages with a hard, short idea.
Bumper (6s)Six seconds, unskippable. One idea only. Genuinely effective for reinforcement alongside a longer campaign.
In-feed videoAppears in search and suggested feeds. Chosen by the viewer, so intent is higher and the thumbnail does the work.
ShortsVertical, fast, high volume. Increasingly where reach is, and it needs creative made for it rather than reformatted.

03 Creative

What the first five seconds need.

Applies regardless of budget, format or targeting.

The opening

  • Start in the middle. No logo, no introduction, no establishing shot. Begin at the interesting part.
  • Name the problem, not the product. Viewers recognise problems instantly and products slowly.
  • Show a face or motion. Static openings are skipped. Movement and faces hold attention long enough to be heard.
  • Work with sound off. A large share of views begin muted. Subtitles are not an accessibility extra here, they are the primary channel.
  • Say who it is for, early. Naming your audience filters out everyone else, which is desirable rather than a loss.
  • Give one action. One thing to do, said clearly, and repeated at the end for the people still watching.

04 Straight talk

When YouTube is worth the budget.

Video production is a real cost. This decides whether it earns it.

Good fit

  • The product must be seen. Demonstrations, transformations, physical processes. Video is genuinely the best medium for these.
  • Nobody searches for it yet. A new category or an unfamiliar solution, where Search has no demand to capture.
  • Remarketing. Viewers who already visited your site. Consistently the best-performing YouTube audience.
  • You already have footage. Existing video lowers the cost enough to change the calculation.

Poor fit

  • Urgent local services. Somebody whose AC broke this morning is on Search, not watching videos.
  • Tiny budgets. Production plus media plus a learning period. Below a real threshold it will not conclude anything.
  • Complex B2B propositions. Sometimes works, but rarely as a first channel and rarely cheaply.
  • No appetite for iteration. The first video is rarely the one that works. One-shot campaigns usually disappoint.
