AI belongs in the research. Not in the byline.

AI makes some SEO work dramatically faster and some SEO work dramatically worse. Knowing which is which is most of the skill, and getting it wrong is visible from the first paragraph.

Short answer

AI SEO means using AI tools inside the SEO workflow — keyword clustering, competitor analysis, data processing, outlining, first drafts — while keeping human judgement on facts, editing and publication. Google’s position is that AI-generated content is acceptable when it is genuinely helpful; unedited bulk AI content is exactly what its spam policies target.

01 The premise

Where AI actually earns its place.

AI is genuinely transformative for a specific part of this job: anything involving volume, pattern and structure. Clustering four thousand keywords into intent groups used to take days and now takes an hour. Reading a competitor’s two hundred pages to find what they cover and you do not is now practical rather than theoretical. Turning a messy crawl export into a prioritised list is trivial.

It is much weaker at the things that decide whether content works: knowing what a customer is actually worried about, having an opinion worth reading, and being accountable for a fact being true. Those are not stylistic weaknesses that a better prompt fixes. They are consequences of the tool having no experience of your business and no stake in being wrong.

So the division I use is simple and I state it publicly. AI does research, clustering, analysis, outlining and first drafts. A person — me — rewrites, checks every fact, decides what to leave out, and puts their name on it as reviewer. If a page is not worth my name being on, it is not worth publishing on your site.

02 Straight talk

Where it helps, where it hurts.

Both columns from doing the work, not from a policy position.

AI does this well

  • Keyword clustering at scale. Thousands of terms grouped by intent in minutes. Genuinely transformative.
  • Competitor content analysis. Reading a large site and reporting what it covers, quickly and reliably.
  • Data processing. Crawl exports, log files, Search Console data, reshaped into something usable.
  • Outlining. A structural first pass that a person then argues with. Useful precisely because it is easy to reject.
  • Repetitive drafting. Meta descriptions and alt text at volume, then reviewed rather than trusted.

AI does this badly

  • Facts. It states plausible things confidently. Every number, date and claim has to be verified independently.
  • Judgement. What to leave out, and what your customer is really afraid of. It has no access to either.
  • Opinion. The thing that makes content worth citing is a view. AI averages; it does not conclude.
  • Your specifics. Your prices, your process, your constraints. It will invent something reasonable-sounding.
  • Being accountable. Somebody has to be answerable for a claim. That cannot be a tool.

03 Policy

What Google actually says.

Worth reading directly rather than through the industry’s interpretation of it.

The policy position

  • AI content is not banned. Google’s stated position is that it rewards helpful content regardless of how it was produced.
  • Bulk unhelpful content is targeted. Its spam policies address content generated at scale primarily to manipulate rankings. That is a description of a common AI workflow.
  • The test is helpfulness. Does the page serve the reader? That has been the direction of travel for years and AI did not change it.
  • Experience is weighted. First-hand experience is part of Google’s stated quality guidance, and it is the one thing a model cannot supply.
  • Attribution matters. A named author and reviewer, with genuine credentials. Cheap to provide and increasingly relevant across every surface.

Is your content obviously AI-written?

Send me three pages. I will tell you whether they read as generated, whether the facts hold up, and what would have to change — which is usually less than a rewrite.

  • An honest read, including "this is fine"
  • You keep the findings either way
  • Facts checked, not just style

04 Workflow

How AI-assisted content is produced.

The workflow, stated so you can hold me to it.

01

Research with AI

Clustering, competitor gaps, question mining. Fast, broad, and checked before anything is acted on.

ClusterGapsQuestions
02

Outline with AI, edit as a person

A structural draft, then reordered and cut against what your customers actually ask.

03

Draft, then rewrite

A first draft is a starting point. What gets published shares almost no sentences with it.

04

Verify every fact

Numbers, dates, claims, prices and platform behaviour checked against a source. This is the step that gets skipped everywhere else.
