01 The premise
Three disasters, all preventable.
The first is being hacked. It is almost never targeted — it is automated software scanning the entire internet for a known vulnerability in an outdated plugin. The fix is unexciting: keep things updated. The consequence of not doing it is a site serving spam, flagged by Google, and a recovery costing many times what prevention would have.
The second is losing data with no working backup. Most sites have “backups” in the sense that a host has a checkbox enabled. Nobody has ever restored one. A backup that has not been tested is a belief rather than a safeguard, and the moment you find out is the worst possible moment.
The third is going offline and not knowing. A site can be down for two days over a weekend before anyone mentions it, and every enquiry in that window is simply gone. Monitoring costs almost nothing and turns a two-day outage into a twenty-minute one.

What maintenance actually covers.
Stated specifically, because “maintenance” is a word that hides a lot of nothing.

- Core, plugin and theme updates. Applied on staging first where the site warrants it, so an update cannot take the live site down.
- Backups, taken and tested. Stored off the hosting account, and actually restored periodically to prove they work.
- Uptime monitoring. Checked continuously, with the alert coming to me rather than to a report you have to read.
- SSL and domain renewals. Watched, because an expired certificate makes browsers actively warn visitors away from your site.
- Speed and Core Web Vitals. Checked monthly, so gradual degradation is noticed before it affects rankings.
- Broken links and 404s. Found and fixed, including the ones created by your own edits.
- Small content changes. A price, a phone number, a new team member — included rather than quoted each time.
- A plain monthly note. What was done, what needs attention, what I recommend. Not an automated dashboard export.
03 Straight talk

- Keeping it working. Updates, security, backups, uptime and the small fixes that accumulate.
- Small content edits. Text, prices, images, adding a page. Reasonable volume, no per-change invoice.

Not covered
- New features. A booking system or a new section is a project, quoted separately.
- Redesigns. Layout changes are design work, not maintenance.
- Marketing. SEO and ads are their own services, and bundling them hides what you are paying for.
- Third-party outages. If your host or payment provider is down I will chase them, but I cannot fix them.

04 The terms
Honest answers about the arrangement.
- It is optional
- Never a condition of a build. Plenty of clients take the code, host it themselves and manage it perfectly well.
- It is cancellable
- Monthly, with no notice period and no exit fee. If it is not earning its keep you should stop paying for it.
- You keep access
- Hosting, domain and code stay in your name throughout. Nothing is held back to make leaving awkward.
- Static sites need less
- A hand-built static site has no plugins to exploit. I will tell you when monitoring and backups alone are enough for you.
- It is not insurance against everything
- It substantially reduces risk. It does not eliminate it, and I will not pretend otherwise.

If your site runs WordPress or any plugin-based system, yes — unpatched plugins are the single most common way small business sites get compromised. If it is a hand-built static site the need is much lower, and I will say so rather than sell you a plan you do not need.
Nothing changes about what you own. The code, hosting and domain are yours, and you can manage it yourself or hire anyone. Maintenance is a service, not a lock. You can also simply call me when something is wrong.
Frequency is matched to how often the site changes — daily for anything storing orders or enquiries, weekly for a site that changes monthly. What matters more than frequency is that they are stored away from the hosting account and periodically restored to prove they work.
Small changes are included: prices, phone numbers, staff, an added page. It is not a licence for a monthly redesign, and if a request is really a project I will say so and quote it rather than quietly doing it badly.
It becomes the priority. The site is taken to a safe state, cleaned or restored from a known-good backup, the entry point identified and closed, and Google’s security warning cleared. If it happened while under maintenance, the cleanup is not billed — that is the point of paying for it.
Yes, after a review. I need to see what is there before committing, because taking on an unmaintainable site helps nobody. If it is in reasonable condition I will maintain it; if it is not, I will tell you what needs fixing first.
