Distribution is decided by watch-through.

Reels are shown to people who do not follow you, and how far they get decides how many more people see it. Retention is not a vanity metric here — it is the distribution mechanism.

Short answer

Reels editing produces short vertical video for Instagram Reels and equivalent formats. Because platforms distribute based on how much of a video people watch, the editing priorities are the opening hook, relentless pacing, and removing anything that gives a viewer a reason to leave before the end.

Reels dying after two seconds? Get a Free Quote

01 The premise

Retention is the algorithm.

Reels distribution works on a straightforward principle: if people watch, it gets shown to more people. That makes watch-through the lever, and it changes what an editor is actually optimising for. Not beauty, not polish — the absence of any moment where a viewer decides to leave.

In practice that means removing everything that is not doing work. Every pause between sentences. Every breath. Every second of establishing shot. Every wind-up before the point. A raw two-minute clip frequently becomes a twenty-five-second reel, and the twenty-five seconds outperform the two minutes by a wide margin because nobody left.

The opening deserves separate treatment because it is where most reels die. A viewer decides within roughly a second, and the decision is made on the first frame and the first words. If the first frame is a logo, a title card or somebody drawing breath, the rest of the edit does not matter.

02 Openings

Hooks that actually work.

Patterns that earn the first second. All of them are specific rather than clever.

Openings

  • Start mid-action. Something is already happening. The most reliable opening there is.
  • Name the problem. “Your AC is cooling less than last year.” Recognition is instant and it is personal.
  • Show the result first. The finished thing, then how it was done. Reverses the natural order and holds attention.
  • Contradict an assumption. A specific, defensible claim that runs against what people believe. Not clickbait — something you can actually support.
  • Ask a real question. One a customer genuinely asks, phrased in their words.
  • Show the mistake. What people get wrong. Reliably watched, and it positions you as someone who knows.

03 The edit

How a reel gets cut.

01

Find the hook in the footage

It is rarely at the start. The best opening is usually forty seconds into the raw clip.

02

Cut every pause

Silences, breaths, wind-ups. This alone typically halves the length and doubles the retention.

03

Add subtitles

Styled consistently, positioned clear of interface elements, timed to speech rather than to blocks.

04

Hold the visual interest

A cut, a zoom, a change roughly every few seconds so the frame never sits still long enough to be left.

05

End with one action

Comment, message or follow. Said clearly, once, at the point where the people still watching are convinced.

04 Measurement

What to measure.

Reels give you the numbers. These are the ones that matter.

Watch-through rate
The share who reached the end. The number that drives distribution, and the one to optimise.
Retention curve
Where people leave. A cliff at two seconds is a hook problem; a slow decline is a pacing problem.
Profile visits
Reach converting into interest. The real funnel step between views and enquiries.
Saves and shares
Signals that content was useful. Both feed distribution more strongly than likes.
Follows per reel
Which content actually earns an audience rather than merely reaching one.
