Social media optimisation is not posting. It is the fixed structure of the profile itself — the part a prospect reads in half a minute before deciding whether you are worth contacting.
Short answer
SMO, or social media optimisation, is the structural work on a profile rather than the ongoing content: the bio, the contact routes, pinned posts, highlights, category and searchable name. It is largely a one-off job, it keeps working without further spend, and it is what decides whether traffic you already have becomes an enquiry.
Four details. A real reply the same day, from me.
01 The premise
A prospect arrives at your profile from an ad, a search or a recommendation. What happens next takes about thirty seconds and follows a predictable order: what is this, is it near me, is it still running, is it any good, how do I contact them. Every one of those is answered by structure rather than by your most recent post.
This is why SMO is worth separating from social media management. Management is ongoing and costs money every month. Optimisation is largely one-off — a bio rewritten once, contact buttons enabled once, highlights organised once — and it keeps converting visitors for years afterwards without further spend.
It is also the cheapest work available in social media, and consequently the least sold. There is no recurring fee in fixing a bio, which is a commercial reason agencies talk about content calendars instead.
02 The checklist
Go through your own profile against this. Most businesses fail three or four.
03 The work
A defined piece of work with an end, not a retainer.

Or send me the handles and I will do it. You will get the specific list of what a first-time visitor cannot find — usually three or four things, all fixable in an afternoon.

These sit next to SMO and are usually bought with it. Same person doing the work in each case.

Social media optimisation: the structural work on a profile rather than the ongoing posting. Bio, display name, contact routes, category, highlights and pinned content. It is mostly a one-off job and it decides whether the visitors you already get become enquiries.
Yes, and confusing them is expensive. SMO is a one-off structural fix with no recurring fee. Management is ongoing content and community work with a monthly cost. SMO should almost always come first, because sending new visitors to a badly structured profile wastes the money that brought them.
Most of it, yes, and the checklist on this page is deliberately complete enough to work from. The parts people get wrong are the searchable name field, choosing the right category, and pointing the profile link somewhere more useful than the homepage.
Indirectly. Social profiles frequently rank for your brand name, so they occupy results that would otherwise be occupied by someone else. Consistent details across profiles also help search engines and AI assistants identify you as one entity, which matters more each year.
For two or three profiles, usually a few days including the back-and-forth over wording. It is a defined project with an end, which is a large part of why it is worth doing before committing to anything monthly.
The ones people actually check before contacting you, which for most Indian businesses is Instagram, Facebook and the Google Business Profile — and LinkedIn if you sell to companies. Optimising a profile nobody visits is tidy but not useful.
