Google is no longer the only place your customer asks the question. They ask ChatGPT, they read an AI Overview, they search inside Instagram. Marketing that only optimises for ten blue links is already behind.
Short answer
Digital marketing now spans three surfaces: classic search rankings (SEO), the direct answers engines assemble above them (AEO), and the citations generative models like ChatGPT and Gemini choose to quote (GEO). I work across all three, plus social and reputation, and report what actually moved rather than what looks good on a slide.
Four details. A real reply the same day, from me.
01 The short version
For twenty years, search marketing meant one thing: appear high in a list of links. That is still worth having — it is still where most commercial traffic comes from — but it is now one of three places a buyer can find you, and it is the one shrinking fastest in share of attention.
The second surface is the answer. Google assembles an AI Overview, a featured snippet or a People Also Ask box, and a large share of searchers never scroll past it. Being the source that box quotes is a different discipline from ranking, and it rewards different things: a crisp definition near the top of the page, clean structure, schema, and a page that answers one question fully.
The third surface is the citation. When somebody asks ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Copilot to recommend a service, the model names a handful of businesses. It picks them from what it has read and what it can verify — consistent entity information, third-party mentions, structured data, content that reads like an authority rather than an advert.
These are not three separate budgets. Most of the work overlaps: fixing your technical foundation helps all three, and content written to genuinely answer a question serves all three. What changes is how you structure it, how you mark it up, and how you measure it.

Technical crawl, index coverage, and a check of what AI Overviews and ChatGPT currently say about your category and your brand. You get the findings either way.
Which searches end in money, what they are worth, who owns them now, and which single page on your site should target each one. Duplicated intent is the most common problem I find.
Technical repairs first, because nothing else works on a site Google cannot crawl. Then titles, structure, schema and internal links.
Content that answers the question properly — long enough to be complete, structured so an answer engine can lift it, credited to a named person.

— Questions
The ones I get asked before every project, answered the way I would answer them on a call.
Technical fixes can change how Google crawls a site within weeks. Competitive rankings take months and depend on your starting position, your competitors, and how much content already exists. Anyone quoting a guaranteed date is selling, not planning.
No, and nobody honest does. Google does not sell placement in organic results and does not publish its ranking function. What I will commit to is the work, the reporting, and telling you early if a target is unrealistic rather than billing you for a year against it.
SEO gets you into the ranked list of links. AEO gets you into the answer box above that list — featured snippets, People Also Ask, AI Overviews. GEO gets you named when somebody asks a generative model like ChatGPT or Gemini for a recommendation. The technical foundations overlap heavily; the content structure and the measurement do not.
Partly, and you should be sceptical of anyone who says otherwise. The overlap is real: crawlability, clean structure and genuine expertise help everywhere. What is genuinely new is optimising for extraction rather than clicks — writing a definition an engine can lift whole, marking it up so it is unambiguous, and building the third-party corroboration a model needs before it will name you.
Yes. They work well together because paid data tells you which keywords convert before you spend six months ranking for them — but there is no requirement to buy both. Plenty of businesses are better served by one.
AI is in my workflow for research, outlining and first drafts. It does not publish. Every page that goes live has been rewritten and fact-checked by me, and carries my name as the reviewer — because unedited AI content reads like unedited AI content, and both Google and your readers can tell.
