An Instagram ad appears between a friend’s holiday and a favourite creator’s post. That is the standard your creative is being judged against, and it is why repurposed print artwork fails so reliably.
Short answer
Instagram Ads run within Feed, Stories, Reels and Explore. They suit visual and considered-impulse categories — clinics, salons, interiors, fashion, food, travel and events. Reels is where the reach now is, which means vertical video made for the placement rather than resized from something else.
Four details. A real reply the same day, from me.
01 The premise
There is a step in Instagram advertising that most advertisers ignore entirely. A user sees your ad, is interested, and taps — frequently onto your profile rather than straight to your website. What they find there decides whether the interest survives. An abandoned profile with four posts from 2023 undoes the ad that was just paid for.
This makes Instagram unusual among paid channels: the organic account is part of the conversion path whether you maintain it or not. It does not need to be prolific. It needs to look current, show real work, and make contacting you obvious. That is a modest requirement and it is very commonly unmet.
The second thing specific to Instagram is that the creative must be made for the placement rather than adapted to it. A square graphic in a Reels slot with bars top and bottom announces that this is an advertisement from someone who does not use the platform. Vertical, full-frame, sound-off-legible video is the format that works, and everything else is a compromise.
02 Creative
The platform is unforgiving about production conventions in a way Facebook is not.
03 Placements
Instagram is several different environments and they reward different creative.
| Placement | What works there |
|---|---|
| Reels | Where the reach is. Vertical video, fast hook, native feel. The primary placement for most advertisers now. |
| Stories | Full-screen, brief, personal. Strong for time-limited offers and for remarketing to warm audiences. |
| Feed | Tolerates a still image and longer caption. Better for considered propositions where detail helps. |
| Explore | Discovery by people actively browsing. Interest is higher, and the creative has to stand out among many. |

Yes, more than most advertisers realise. Interested users frequently tap through to the profile before enquiring. An abandoned profile with old posts undermines the ad that brought them. It does not need to be prolific — current and credible is enough.
Reels for reach, because that is where distribution now sits. Feed still works for considered propositions where a longer caption helps. Most advertisers should be testing Reels-first creative and treating feed as secondary.
You can, and it is usually a mistake for video. Instagram expects vertical, native, fast-paced content; Facebook tolerates more variety and older audiences. Cropping one square asset into every placement is efficient and visibly so.
Costs vary by category, season and audience competitiveness, and are higher during festive periods when everyone is bidding. Rather than a benchmark, the useful figure is your own cost per qualified lead, which is the only number that tells you whether to continue.
They can, particularly through whitelisting — running ads from the creator’s handle, which performs better than the same content from a brand account because it reads as native. It works best with genuinely relevant creators rather than large follower counts.
Usually one of three: the landing page does not continue the ad’s promise, the profile they checked first was unconvincing, or the offer was interesting to look at and not interesting enough to act on. All three are diagnosable in an hour.
