Small games for campaigns. Not studio productions.

There is a real difference between a browser game built to run a campaign and a commercial game built to compete for entertainment time. I build the first and I will point you elsewhere for the second.

Short answer

Gaming app development in this context means casual and promotional games: browser-based campaign games, simple mobile games for engagement, gamified loyalty mechanics and quizzes. Commercial games with substantial art, physics and monetisation requirements need a specialist studio, not a generalist developer.

01 The premise

Where my scope ends.

It is worth being direct about this. A commercial mobile game — original art, a physics engine, level design, monetisation, live operations, sustained content updates — is a specialist discipline requiring a team of people who do only that. I am not that team, and taking on such a project would be a disservice.

What I do build is the considerably smaller category that businesses actually ask for most often: a game as part of a marketing campaign. A spin-to-win mechanic on a festival landing page. A quiz that captures leads. A simple browser game with a leaderboard for an event. Gamified elements inside an existing app or loyalty programme.

Those work on completely different criteria. The measure is not entertainment quality but campaign performance — participation, data captured, sharing, and repeat visits. They are built to be played once or twice during a campaign, on a phone browser, with no install. That is a genuinely different brief and one I can do well.

02 Straight talk

What I build, and what I do not.

Stated plainly so nobody wastes a meeting.

In scope

  • Promotional browser games. Spin-to-win, scratch cards, quizzes, simple arcade mechanics for a campaign.
  • Lead-capture games. Where playing produces a qualified enquiry, which is the actual objective.
  • Gamified loyalty. Points, streaks, tiers and badges inside an existing app or programme.
  • Event and leaderboard games. Short competitions with a live leaderboard for an event or a launch.

Out of scope

  • Commercial mobile games. Original art, physics, level design and live operations. A studio job.
  • Multiplayer real-time games. Networking and matchmaking are a specialism of their own.
  • 3D and console work. Not my field, and I will not pretend otherwise.
  • Real-money gaming. Heavily regulated in India and varying by state. A legal question before a technical one.

03 Design rules

What makes a campaign game actually work.

The measure is participation and data, not entertainment.

Design rules

  • Playable in under a minute. A campaign game competing for thirty seconds of attention, not an evening.
  • No install. Browser-based, opening from a link in an ad, a message or a QR code. An install requirement kills participation.
  • Instantly understandable. No instructions. If it needs explaining, most people leave before playing.
  • Works on mid-range phones. Where the audience is. A game that stutters is closed immediately.
  • Data capture built in. The commercial purpose. Where it happens in the flow determines both participation and lead volume.
  • Shareable outcome. A score or a result worth sending to somebody. The cheapest distribution available.
  • Honest mechanics. If a prize is involved, the odds and terms must be genuine and stated. This is a legal matter as well as an ethical one.

Is a game the right mechanic?

Tell me the campaign objective. Sometimes a game is genuinely the best way to get participation and data; frequently a simpler offer outperforms it for a fraction of the cost, and I will say so.

  • An honest answer, including "do not build a game"
  • Clear scope boundary stated up front
  • Prize and data terms flagged early

04 Before commissioning

Before you commission one.

Questions that decide whether a campaign game is the right spend at all.

What is the actual objective?
Leads, data, sharing or awareness. A game with no defined commercial purpose is entertainment you paid for.
Is a game the best way?
Frequently a simple offer outperforms a game at a fraction of the cost. I will say so if I think that.
What are the prize terms?
If prizes are involved, the terms, odds and eligibility need proper drafting. This is where campaigns get into difficulty.
How long does it run?
A campaign game has an end date. Building something to be maintained indefinitely is a different, larger commitment.
What happens to the data?
Consent, purpose and retention decided before launch rather than after somebody asks.
