Fix the profile first
Google Business Profile complete, verified and accurate. Ads amplify it, and an incomplete profile wastes the amplification.
Google Ads · Delhi NCR & remote
For a clinic, a workshop or a restaurant, a website visit is not the goal. A phone ringing is. Campaigns built around clicks systematically under-report what local advertising actually produces.
Short answer
Google local ads target people searching near your business and optimise for physical-world actions — phone calls, direction requests and store visits — rather than website clicks. They rely on a properly configured Google Business Profile, radius targeting that matches how far customers actually travel, and call tracking.
Four details. A real reply the same day, from me.
01 The premise
A local business runs Google Ads, sees a respectable number of clicks and a disappointing number of website enquiries, and concludes the campaign failed. Frequently it did not. The customers called instead — and if call tracking was never configured, those calls are invisible to the account and to the person judging it.
This is the defining characteristic of local advertising: the valuable actions happen off the website. Somebody taps the call button in the ad itself. Somebody asks for directions and drives over. Neither leaves a trace in the ordinary conversion setup, and both are worth considerably more than a form fill.
Getting local advertising right is therefore mostly about measurement and reach rather than about clever copy. Track calls as conversions. Track direction requests. Link the Google Business Profile so location extensions can appear. And set the radius from where customers genuinely travel from, not from an ambition to cover the whole city.
02 Setup
Half of these are missing from most local accounts I open.
03 Types
Three different things frequently discussed as one.
| Type | What it is and when to use it |
|---|---|
| Search with location targeting | Ordinary Search ads shown to people in your area. The default, and right for most local businesses. |
| Call-only campaigns | The ad’s only action is a phone call, with no landing page. Excellent for urgent services — repairs, breakdowns, medical. |
| Local Services Ads | A separate Google product with background checks and a Google Guarantee badge, charged per lead rather than per click. Availability varies by country and category, so check before planning around it. |

For a local business, calls are usually the majority of the conversions and frequently none of the tracked ones. Give me view access and I will tell you what your account is failing to measure.

04 Process
Google Business Profile complete, verified and accurate. Ads amplify it, and an incomplete profile wastes the amplification.
Call conversions, direction requests, and a minimum call duration so wrong numbers do not count as leads.
From where your customers actually come, using your own records rather than an assumption about the city.
“Open now”, “2 km away”, “same-day visit”. Proximity and availability are the local advantage — state them.
Cost per call and cost per qualified call. Website conversions alone will make a working campaign look broken.

Through call conversion tracking — both calls made directly from the ad and calls from a tracked number on your website. Set a minimum duration, typically thirty to sixty seconds, so misdials and hang-ups do not count as leads.
The distance your customers genuinely travel, which you can usually work out from your own records. A convenience service might be two kilometres; a specialist clinic might be thirty. Targeting an entire city because it feels ambitious is the commonest and most expensive local mistake.
A separate Google product where you are charged per lead rather than per click, and eligible businesses can display a Google Guarantee badge after background checks. Availability differs by country and category, so confirm whether it exists for your business before building a plan around it.
For urgent services — repairs, breakdowns, emergency medical — frequently yes. Somebody whose appliance failed this morning wants to speak to a person, not read a page. The one requirement is that calls are actually answered promptly during the hours you advertise.
Yes. Advertising is not restricted by physical presence the way the map pack is, so you can target any area you genuinely serve. Be honest in the ad about where you are based — advertising as local when you are two hours away produces cancelled jobs and bad reviews.
Common causes: calls are happening but untracked, the radius is too wide so you are reaching people who will not travel, ads run outside the hours you answer the phone, or the Google Business Profile is incomplete so location extensions never show.
