The free channel first. Then buy anything.

Most local businesses buy advertising while their Google profile sits half-filled, unphotographed and unanswered. That profile is free and it usually produces more enquiries than the ads would.

Short answer

Local business marketing covers businesses serving customers within a defined area. Its defining feature is that the largest channel is free: a complete, active Google Business Profile with recent reviews frequently produces more enquiries than paid advertising, and it is consistently neglected.

01 The premise

The order most businesses get wrong.

A local business decides it needs more customers and buys advertising. Meanwhile its Google Business Profile has a wrong category, four fields empty, photographs from three years ago, eleven reviews with none answered, and hours that were correct before the last change. That profile is free, it appears at the top of local results, and it is doing a fraction of what it could.

Fixing it costs nothing but attention and it frequently produces more enquiries than the advertising budget under consideration. That is an uncomfortable thing for somebody selling marketing services to say, and it is consistently true. I would rather say it than take money for ads that compensate for a neglected free channel.

Once that is done, paid advertising works considerably better anyway — the profile supports the ads, the reviews make the clicks convert, and the proximity signals are stronger. The order matters, and it is almost always reversed.

02 In order

The local checklist.

The first four cost nothing. Go through them before considering any budget.

In order

  • Complete the Google profile. Every field, correct primary category, services listed, accurate hours including holidays.
  • Add real photographs regularly. Your premises, your work, your team. Profiles with current photographs consistently outperform neglected ones.
  • Collect reviews routinely. Asked as part of closing every job, with a one-tap link. Recency matters as much as volume.
  • Answer everything. Reviews, questions and messages, including critical ones. Visible to every future customer.
  • Make the phone number tappable. Above the fold on every page. Not an image, not a graphic.
  • Track calls as conversions. For local businesses calls are usually most of the enquiries and usually untracked.
  • Then advertise. With the radius set from where customers actually come, and only during hours you answer.

03 Sources

Where local enquiries come from.

Roughly in order of volume for a typical local service business.

SourceWhat it delivers
Google Business ProfileCalls and direction requests at no media cost. The largest free source, and the most neglected.
Organic local searchSlow to build, then continuous. Depends on the profile, location pages and consistent citations.
Google Search adsHigh intent and immediate. Worth the cost when calls are actually tracked.
Referral and repeatThe cheapest of all, and most businesses have no system for encouraging it.
Meta adsLower intent, cheaper. Useful for services people do not search for until they urgently need them.
DirectoriesJustdial, IndiaMART and sector sites. Leads are usually sold to competitors too, so speed decides everything.

04 Decision factors

What decides a local buying decision.

Different from almost every other sector on this page.

Proximity
The strongest factor and the one you cannot change. It is why radius targeting matters so much.
Reviews
Volume and recency together. Forty reviews from 2021 read as a business that has stopped trading.
Answering the phone
A missed call is a lost job. For urgent local services this outweighs almost every marketing decision.
Speed of attendance
Same-day beats cheaper for most urgent local services. Say it plainly if it is true.
Visible legitimacy
A real address, photographs of actual premises, a landline. Local customers check these.
