Built for the phone your customer actually has.

Android in India is not a recent flagship on office wi-fi. It is a mid-range device, three years old, with limited free storage and a data connection that comes and goes.

Short answer

Android app development builds applications for the platform that reaches the overwhelming majority of Indian smartphone users. The decisive constraints are practical rather than technical: app size on devices with little free storage, performance on mid-range hardware, and behaviour on intermittent connections.

01 The premise

The device, not the specification.

Android development advice written elsewhere assumes a recent device with plenty of storage and a good connection. The Indian reality is different, and designing for it is most of what separates an app people keep from an app people uninstall in week two to make room for something else.

Storage is the first constraint and the most brutal. On a device with a gigabyte of free space, a large app is a candidate for deletion whenever the phone complains. App size is therefore a retention feature, not a technical nicety — and Android App Bundles, which deliver only the code and assets a specific device needs, are worth using for exactly this reason.

The second is that the connection is unreliable. An app that shows a spinner and then an error when the signal drops in a lift feels broken. One that shows what it already has, queues the action and syncs when the connection returns feels solid. That difference is design work rather than infrastructure, and it is what people actually judge.

02 Priorities

What matters on Indian Android.

Constraints that decide retention more than any feature does.

Priorities

  • App size. Kept small deliberately. On devices short of storage, a large app is the first thing deleted.
  • Mid-range performance. Tested on an actual mid-range device, not only on an emulator or a flagship.
  • Offline tolerance. Showing cached data and queueing actions rather than failing when the signal drops.
  • Data economy. Images sized appropriately, background sync restrained. Data costs are a real consideration for many users.
  • Battery behaviour. Aggressive background work gets an app killed by the system and uninstalled by the user.
  • Older Android versions. Supporting genuinely old versions where your audience is on them, rather than assuming the latest.
  • Play Store policy. Permissions justified, privacy policy published, data safety declared accurately. Rejections here are common and avoidable.

03 Process

From build to store.

The submission steps that are frequently underestimated.

01

Scope and design

What it does, on what devices, for whom. Including the decision of which Android versions to support.

02

Build and test on real devices

Emulators miss performance, memory and connectivity behaviour. A mid-range handset is the honest test.

Prepare the listing

Screenshots, description, privacy policy, data safety form. This is a real task and it delays launches when left late.

Submit and iterate

Review can reject for permissions, policy or metadata. Frequently fixable in a day if anticipated.

Maintain

Annual Android releases and periodic Play policy changes. Apps that are not updated eventually stop being distributed.

Have you tested it on a mid-range phone?

Most Indian Android users are not on a flagship. If the app has only been seen on a developer’s device, the real experience is unknown — and it is usually the difference.
