Most people leave. That is normal.

The overwhelming majority of first-time visitors do not enquire, and that is not a failure of your website. Remarketing is simply the acknowledgement that a first visit is rarely a decision.

Short answer

Google remarketing shows ads to people who have already visited your website, across Search, Display and YouTube. It usually produces the cheapest conversions in an account because the audience already knows you. The two things that decide whether it works are segmenting by what they did, and capping how often they see you.

01 The premise

The cheapest audience you will ever buy.

A remarketing audience is composed entirely of people who have already found you, visited your site and formed some level of interest. Compared with reaching a stranger, almost everything is easier: they recognise the name, they understand what you do, and the ad is a reminder rather than an introduction. Cost per conversion is usually the lowest in the account by a wide margin.

Which is why the commonest mistake is not running it at all. Businesses spend heavily to bring people to a website and then let the ninety-odd per cent who leave disappear permanently, when reaching them again costs a fraction of what it cost to reach them first.

The second commonest mistake is running it without restraint. Showing the same banner to the same person forty times a day does not increase the chance of a sale — it converts mild interest into active irritation, and it wastes budget on impressions past the point of usefulness. Frequency capping is not a nicety; it is part of making the campaign work.

02 Audiences

Audiences worth separating.

One undifferentiated “all visitors” list is the default and the weakest possible setup.

Segmentation

  • All visitors. The baseline. Useful, but treating a bounce and a pricing-page reader identically wastes both.
  • Viewed a specific service. Someone who read your SEO page should see an SEO message, not a generic brand banner.
  • Reached pricing or contact. High intent, and worth a materially higher bid than the rest.
  • Started but did not finish. Abandoned form or cart. The single highest-value remarketing audience there is.
  • Converted already. Excluded from acquisition campaigns, and targeted separately for repeat business. Paying to acquire an existing customer is pure waste.
  • By recency. Someone who visited yesterday deserves a different frequency and bid from someone who visited two months ago.
  • Customer lists. Your own email list uploaded, for repeat business and for lookalike building.

03 Straight talk

Restraint, and why it pays.

Remarketing is the one channel where doing less frequently produces more.

Do this

  • Cap frequency. A sensible daily and weekly limit. Beyond it you are buying resentment.
  • Set membership duration by cycle. Thirty days for an impulse purchase, six months for a considered one. Not the default for everything.
  • Exclude converters. Immediately, from acquisition campaigns. This is missing from most accounts.
  • Rotate creative. The same banner for six months stops being seen, even by people looking at it.

Never do this

  • Follow people indefinitely. A visitor from last September does not need a banner today.
  • Remarket sensitive categories carelessly. Health, finance and personal matters. Restricted by policy in places, and a trust problem everywhere.
  • Use one message for everyone. A bounce and an abandoned checkout are entirely different people.
  • Ignore the caps because impressions are cheap. They are cheap. Goodwill is not.
