This page is the explanation rather than the sales pitch. What these surfaces are, what is genuinely known about how they select sources, and where the industry is guessing.
Short answer
Answer engine optimization is the practice of structuring content so search systems can extract a direct answer from it. The main surfaces are featured snippets, People Also Ask, and AI Overviews. All three appear to favour content that answers a specific question concisely, near the top of a page, on a site the engine already considers credible.
Four details. A real reply the same day, from me.
01 Definitions
Four different things that get lumped together as “the answer box”.
02 The mechanics
Featured snippets are the best understood, because they have existed longest and are drawn from a single page that already ranks. The observable pattern is consistent: a concise answer, close to the question, in a structure that matches what the snippet wants — a paragraph for a definition, an ordered list for a process, a table for a comparison. If your answer is spread across four paragraphs, there is nothing clean to lift.
People Also Ask behaves similarly and is more forgiving. The questions are genuinely related searches, and the sources quoted are frequently not the top result. A page that answers a specific sub-question well can appear there without dominating the main term, which makes it one of the more accessible wins available.
AI Overviews are the least transparent. Google has said they are generated from information across the web and link to sources, and that they use its existing ranking systems as an input. What Google has not published — and what nobody outside can reliably reverse-engineer — is a selection function. Anyone presenting one as fact is presenting a hypothesis.
One thing worth knowing precisely, because it is widely muddled: the Google-Extended crawler control governs whether your content is used to improve Gemini and Vertex AI. It does not remove you from AI Overviews, which are served through ordinary Google Search indexing. Blocking Google-Extended to stay out of AI answers in search does not work, and blocking Googlebot to achieve it removes you from search entirely.
03 What works
Observable, testable, and largely stable across the surfaces.
Free AEO audit
The method above is genuinely something you can apply yourself. If you would rather it was done properly across every page that matters, that is the service — and it starts with an audit you keep either way.
Four details, and a real reply today.
04 Straight talk
The line matters, because most AEO advice presents the right column as the left.
05 How to do it
A method you can run yourself on your most important page this afternoon.
Something a customer actually asks, in their words. Take it from an enquiry rather than a keyword tool.
Complete, self-contained, and comprehensible without the rest of the page. Put it directly beneath the heading.
A list if it is a process, a table if it is a comparison, a paragraph if it is a definition.
FAQPage schema where the page genuinely has questions and answers, matching the visible text exactly.
Search the question. Screenshot the result. Compare. This is the only measurement that means anything.

SEO aims to rank a page in the list of results. AEO aims to have content extracted into a direct answer above that list. They share a foundation — crawlability, credibility, genuine expertise — and differ in emphasis: AEO favours concise, well-structured, unambiguous answers over comprehensive pages.
For featured snippets, effectively yes — they are drawn from pages already on the first page of results. People Also Ask is more forgiving and frequently quotes pages that are not top-ranked. AI Overviews draw on ranking systems but the relationship is looser and less predictable.
No. Google-Extended controls whether your content is used to improve Gemini and Vertex AI models. AI Overviews are served through Google Search and use ordinary Googlebot indexing. This is widely misunderstood, and the only way to stay out of search-based AI answers is to leave search.
It is harmless and takes ten minutes, so there is little reason not to. But it is a 2024 community proposal with limited confirmed adoption by the major engines, not an established standard. Treat it as a cheap experiment, not as a ranking factor.
For purely informational queries, they can — a fully answered question sometimes ends the search. For commercial queries the effect is far smaller, because someone deciding what to buy or who to hire rarely stops at a summary. Being the quoted source also carries attribution value that a tenth-place ranking does not.
Frequently, at present. These surfaces are actively being developed and their behaviour shifts. Anything on this page presented as settled has been stable for some time; anything I am unsure about is labelled as such, and that labelling is the point.
